June Sees Rise In Sale Of New Vans

Over the last six months, you will be interested to read that there has been a rise in the sale of new vans here in the UK. So, this information will no doubt come as welcome news in particular to motor traders involved in the buying and selling of new vans.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of light commercial vehicles registered in the UK in June 2019 went up by 13.5% when compared with June 2018. We are sure that you will agree this is a big increase and let us hope that this trend continues in the coming months.

In June 2019, there were 39,929 new vans registered in the category up to 3.5 tonnes whereas in June 2018 there were 35,182 new vans registered.  It was new vans in the category 2.5 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes that saw the biggest percentage increase. In June 2019 there were 26,123 of them sold compared to 21,374 in June 2018 – an increase of 22.2%. In the category of new vans up to 2 tonnes there were 3,116 registered compared to 2,825 registered – a rise of 10.3%.

On a year to date basis to June 2019, the number of new vans registered up to 3.5 tonnes amounted to 196,418 whereas in the same period to June 2018 there were 180,696 new vans registered – a rise of 8.7%. The biggest increase in registrations was again in the 2,5 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes category with 123,039 new vans being registered in the year to date to June 2019 compared to 110,449 new vans being registered in the same period to June 2018 – a rise of 11.4%.

The top 5 selling new vans in June 2019 were: –

  1. Ford Transit Custom                                      7,005
  2. Ford Transit                                                   3,407
  3. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter                                2,799
  4. Volkswagen Transporter                                2,242
  5. Ford Ranger                                                   1,883

The top 5 selling new vans on a year to date basis to June 2019 were: –

  1. Ford Transit Custom                                       30,891
  2. Ford Transit                                                    15.183
  3. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter                                 12,291
  4. Volkswagen Transporter                                 10,636
  5. Ford Ranger                                                    8,561

It is pleasing to see 3 Ford vans in the top 5. It will be interesting to see if this continues to be the case in the coming months. It certainly looks like the Ford Transit Custom will take some catching up.

Obviously, the number of new vans sold also has implications upon the number of used vans sold here in the UK.
