AFVs Account for Over 10% Of New Cars Registered In November

December 6, 2019 by Logan Biggs

The sale of new alternatively fuelled vehicles (AFVs) is going very well here in the UK according to figures produced by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). If you are a motor trader, you will be interested to read that the market share of such registrations in November 2019 was 10.2%. This equates to just over 16,000 new cars.

However, the number of new cars registered of all fuel types i.e. petrol, diesel and AFVs fell once again here in the UK in November compared to the same month last year. This will yet again come as disappointing news to all involved in the motor trade industry.

In November 2019, the number of new cars registered amounted to 156,621 whereas in November 2018 the figure was 158,639. This is a fall of 1.3%.

Private new car sales dropped by 6.1% from 69,342 to 65,114. Fleet new car sales rose by 2.8% from 84,583 to 86,942. Business new car sales fell by 3.2% from 4,714 to 4,565.

The sale of new diesel fuelled cars dropped considerably by 27.2% from 50,750 to 36,941 when comparing November 2018 with November 2019. New petrol fuelled car sales increased slightly by 2% from 95,537 to 97,441.

When comparing on a year to date basis to November 2019 with the same period last year there has been a fall of 2.7% in the number of new cars registered in the UK from 2,223,058 to 2,162,143.

Private new car sales for the above year to date periods dropped by 3.4% from 997,470 to 963,409. Fleet new car sales rose slightly by 0.3% from 1,139,729 to 1,143,199. Business new car sales dropped significantly by 35.3% from 85,859 to 55,535.

The sale of new diesel cars for the above year to date periods dropped by 22% from 704,486 to 549,793. New petrol car sales rose slightly by 2.2% from 1,374,162 to 1,404,389.

The top 5 selling new cars in November 2019 were: –

  1. Vauxhall Corsa                                    4,296
  2. Ford Kuga                                           4,183
  3. Ford Fiesta                                          3,963
  4. Volkswagen Golf                                3,941
  5. Ford Focus                                          3,841

The top 5 selling new cars on a year to date basis to November 2019 were: –

  1. Ford Fiesta                                          73,665
  2. Volkswagen Golf                                54,409
  3. Vauxhall Corsa                                    53,637
  4. Ford Focus                                          53,358
  5. Mercedes-Benz A-Class                      50,674

It is great to see how the sale of AFVs is going but we are sure that motor traders will be concerned about the sale of new petrol and diesel cars here in the UK. Let us hope that we soon see a turnaround in performance as the motor trade industry provides, amongst other things, employment and business opportunities for a lot of people.
