Annual Figures Reveal Small Drop In New Van Sales

January 15, 2019 by Logan Biggs

According to data produced by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there was a small fall in the number of new vans sold here in the UK in the year to 31st December 2018. This news will no doubt come as a disappointment to motor traders in particular those who operate within the sale of new and used vans.

The number on new vans in the weight category up to 3.5 tonnes sold in the year to 31st December 2018 was 357,325 whereas in the same period to 2017 the figure was 362,149. This represents a drop of 1.3%.

When comparing the month of December 2018 with the same month in 2017, there was a bigger drop of 8.8%. In December 2018, there were 25,549 new vans sold in the weight category up to 3.5 tonnes but for the same month in 2017 the figure was 28,016.

It could be argued that the number of new vans that are sold here in the UK is a reflection of how the small business sector is doing. After all, it is probably more likely that a successful new business is more likely to change their used van for a new one more frequently. In fact, a business that is struggling is probably less likely to invest in a new van and, instead, may choose to exchange their old van for another used one that is perhaps not as old as the one he or she is currently driving.

The motor trade industry is affected in so many ways by the number of new vans that are sold as, if there are less new vans on our roads, this means that garages are not going to be as busy servicing them. Let us hope that 2019 sees an improvement in the number of new vans that are sold here in the UK as the industry certainly needs a boost at the moment.
