Another Reduction In New Car Sales

Yet again, there has been another monthly drop in new car sales with this news no doubt disappointing those of you in the motor trade industry but in particular motor traders. Figures produced by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have revealed that there was a fall of 3% in the number of new cars sold when comparing November 2018 with the same month last year.

In November 2018, the number of new cars registered amounted to 158,639 but in November 2017 there were 163,541. There were 51,429 new diesel cars sold in November 2018 whereas in the same month last year there were 61,752. That is a drop of 16.7% and the market share has fallen from 37.8% in November 2017 to 32.4% in November 2018. The number of new petrol cars sold in November rose from 93,143 in November 2017 to 96,441 in the same month this year with this being a rise of 3.5%. The market share rose from57% in November last year to 60.8% in November 2018. There was a big increase in new AFVs with 8,646 being registered in November 2017 but 10,769 in November2018 โ€“ a rise of 24.6%. Market share increased from 5.3% in November 2017 to6.8% in November 2018.

On a year to date basis to November 2018,there were 2,223,058 new cars registered yet in the same period to November2017 there were 2,388,144. This is a significant fall of 6.9%. There was a large drop in the number of new diesel cars sold with 707,702 in the year to date to November 2018 compared to 1,008,323 in the same period to November 2017โ€“ a fall of 29.8%. Market share dropped from 42.2% to 31.8%. The number of new petrol cars sold rose from 1,271,312 in the period to November 2017 to1,382,981 in the period to November 2018 โ€“ a rise of 8.8%. Market share rose from 53.2% to 62.2%. The number of new AFVs sold rose from 108,509 to 132,375for the same periods with this being an increase of 22%. Market share rose from 4.5% to 6%.

The top 5 selling cars for the year to date to November 2018 were: –

  1. Ford Fiesta                              90,173
  2. Volkswagen Golf                    60,605
  3. Vauxhall Corsa                        48,651
  4. Nissan Qashqai                       47,937
  5. Ford Focus                              46,573

Let us hope that we see a turnaround in the fortunes of the new car sales market in December and beyond. The motor trade industry is huge and provides many jobs and income for the government. It is important that we see as many new cars being sold as possible as this not only provides work for those employed directly within the industry but also for industries connected with the sale of new cars.
