Motor traders involved in the sale of new cars here in the UK will be aware how difficult the market is at the moment. Figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals April to have been a disappointing month for the registration of new cars.
In April 2022 there were 119,167 new cars bought here in the UK with this being 15.8% lower than the same month last year when 141,583 of such vehicles were sold. We are sure that you will agree this is a significant reduction and one that the motor trade industry could well do without.
On a year to date basis to April 2022, there were 536,727 new cars registered in the UK compared to 567,108 for the same period to April 2021. That is a drop of 5.4%.

One of the reasons for the fall in the sale of new cars is due to the shortage of semiconductors. However, it is going to be interesting to see what impact the current economic situation in the UK has on the sale of such vehicles as more and more people in the UK have to “tighten their belts” due to rising household expenditure. Rather than purchase a new car there will be many people who no doubt feel it financially prudent to defer doing so and instead hold onto their existing vehicle for a little longer.
