Bus, Coach and HGV Registrations Fall In Q2 2020

August 19, 2020 by mti

Motor traders and others working within the motor trade industry will be disappointed to hear that the number of new buses, coaches and HGVs registered in the UK in the second quarter of 2020 dropped. That is according to data produced by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In the second quarter of 2020, there were 328 new buses and coaches registered here in the UK with this being a fall of 77.1% when compared with the same quarter in 2019.There were 208 minibuses, 51 single-deck and 69 double-deck buses and coaches registered in Q2 2020. On a year to date basis to the second quarter of 2020, there were 1,731 new buses and coaches registered with this being a fall of 34.6% when compared with the same period last year.

Obviously, it will not come as a surprise to people to read that this fall is due in part to COVID-19 as there have been fewer passengers travelling on public transport in recent months. It is to be hoped that there is a turnaround in performance in the coming months as lockdown measures hopefully reduce.

Those motor traders involved in the sale of new HGVs will be concerned at the figures for the number of new HGVs being registered in the UK. In the second quarter of 2020, there were only 4,151 new HGVs registered whereas in the second quarter of 2019 there were 15,605 new HGVs registered. That is a huge fall of 73.4%. On a year to date basis to Q2 2020, the figure was 13,344 – down from 27,464 for the same period in 2019 – a fall of 51.4%.

Motor traders will be hoping that the number of new buses, coaches and HGVs being registered here in the UK in the coming months will improve. Such sales also have implications for the used vehicle market and other areas within the motor trade industry.
