Car Production Drops Again

August 29, 2019 by Logan Biggs

Yet again, the number of cars built here in the UK has fallen for another month – this time in July 2019. This is the 14th month in a row this has happened and will concern many businesses involved in the motor trade industry.

According to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of new cars built here in the UK in July 2019 amounted to 108,239. In the same month last year, the figure was 121,051. That is a significant fall of 10.6%. In July 2019, the number of cars built for the home market totalled 21,381 compared to 19,401 for July 2018 – an increase of 10.2%. However, the number of cars built for export in July 2019 amounted to 86,858 whereas in July 2018 the figure was 101, 650 – a fall of 14.6%.

On a year to date basis to July 2019, the number of cars built amounted to 774,760 with this figure being considerably lower than the 955,624 new cars built here in the UK on a year to date basis to July 2018. This equates to a fall of 18.9%. Cars built for the home market fell to 154,581 from 178,666 – a drop of 13.5%. Cars manufactured for the export market fell to 620,179 from 776,958 – a fall of 20.2%.

These figures will worry many people in the motor trade industry. Let us hope that the situation improves in the coming months.

Whilst writing, we thought you might also find it of interest to read about the UK commercial vehicle manufacturing situation here in the UK. In July 2019, the number of commercial vehicles built amounted to 5,043 but in July 2018 the figure was 7,333 – that is a huge drop of 31.2%. On a year to date basis to July 2019, the figure was 40,173 whereas for the same period to July 2018 the figure was 49,064 – a reduction of 18.1%.

It is to be hoped that we soon see a reversal in the above figures. We will of course keep our readers up to date with relevant information.
