Drop In New Van Registrations In First Two Months Of This Year

March 11, 2022 by mti

If you are a motor trader involved in the sale of new vans here in the UK then you may find it of interest to read that the number of new vans sold in the first 2 months of 2022 have fallen quite considerably when compared with the same period in 2021.

For instance, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of new vans registered in January and February of this year in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 33,731 whereas in the same period last year the figure was 41,234. That equates to a fall of 18.2%. However, it is worth noting that the number of new vans sold in the first 2 months of 2022 is in excess of the numbers sold before the pandemic.

The top 3 selling new vans in the UK in the first 2 months of 2022 were: –

  1. Ford Transit Custom               2,647
  2. Ford Transit                            1,668
  3. Citroen Berlingo                      1,588

As can be seen, Ford holds the top 2 places.

Whilst writing, it is interesting to note that the sale of new cars in the UK actually increased in the first 2 months of 2022 in comparison to the same period in 2021 – a different picture to that of new van sales. For instance, 174.081 new cars were registered in the first couple of months of this year compared to 141,561 for the same period in 2021.

The top 3 selling new cars in the UK in the first 2 months of 2022 were: –

  1. Vauxhall Corsa                        4,262
  2. Kia Sportage                           4,134
  3. MINI                                       4,088

Motor traders who sell new vans in the UK will be hoping for an increase in the number of vehicles as of course will those selling new cars. We will continue to keep you updated periodically with relevant statistics to the motor trade industry.
