Drop In Sale Of New Buses And Coaches

March 23, 2019 by Logan Biggs

There are obviously fewer motor traders selling new buses and coaches than there are selling new cars but those of you involved in this specialist sector of the motor trade industry will be disappointed to read that there was a drop in the sale of such vehicles in 2018 when compared with 2017.

In 2018, there were 7,236 new buses and coaches sold here in the UK. This was a fall of 5.6% when compared with the figures for 2017 according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In 2018, there were 4,023 new minibuses above 3.5 tonnes sold with this being a 5% rise on the previous year, there were 2,046 new single-deck buses and coaches sold with this being a fall of 8.5% and there were 1,167 new double-deck buses and coaches sold with this being a drop of 26.8%.

In the 4th quarter of 2018 there were 880 new minibuses above 3.5 tonnes sold with this being a rise of 0.9% when compared with the same quarter of 2017.There were 423 single-deck buses and coaches built with this being a 14.3% increase and 291 double-deck buses and coaches built with this being a drop of 34.6% when compared with the same quarter in 2017. Overall the number of buses and coaches built in the 4th quarter of 2018 amounted to 1,594 equating to a fall of 5.6% in comparison to the 4th quarter of 2017.

Overall, a number of motor traders involved in the selling of such vehicles will possibly be a little concerned to see some of the above figures and let us hope that we see an improvement in 2019. The motor trade industry certainly needs a boost.

Of course, there are so many areas of this industry that are impacted by the number of new vehicles being sold. For instance, the used vehicle market may likely be impacted. Those businesses involved in the servicing of buses and coaches would no doubt welcome more of these vehicles being sold. Also, bodywork repair outlets need a steady level of business coming through their doors to maintain profitability.
