Drop In Sale Of New HGVs, Buses And Coaches

Motor traders involved in the sale of new HGVs, buses and coaches here in the UK will be interested to read that the numbers of these vehicles sold fell in the third quarter of this year when compared with the same period in 2019 according to figures produced by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In the third quarter of 2020 the number of new HGVs sold totalled 8,419 compared to 8,557 in the third quarter of 2019. This is a small reduction of 1.6%.

The number of new rigids sold in Q3 2020 amounted to 5,020 with this being a big increase when compared with 4,457 in Q3 2019. This is an increase of 12.6%. The number of new artics sold in Q3 2020 amounted to 3,399 with this being a large drop when compared with Q3 2019 when 4,100 were sold. This is a fall of 17.1%.

On a year to date basis to 30th September 2020 the total number of new HGVs registered amounted to 21,763 compared with 36,021 on a year to date basis to 30th September 2019. This is a huge reduction of 39.6%. 

The number of new buses and coaches sold in the third quarter of 2020 here in the UK amounted to 1,044 compared to 1,340 sold in the third quarter of 2019. This is a fall of 22.1%. On a year to date basis to 30th September 2020, the number of such vehicles registered amounted to 2,775 compared to 3.985 for the same period in 2019. That is a drop of 30.4%.

The pandemic has no doubt had an impact on the sale of new HGVs, buses and coaches here in the UK in 2020. Motor traders involved in the sale of such vehicles will no doubt be hoping that things improve sooner rather than later. We will continue to keep our readers updated with interesting statistics.
