Engine Production Increases In April and Van Sales Rise In May

June 15, 2021 by mti

It will probably not come as a surprise for those of you involved in the motor trade industry to read that engine manufacturing in the UK in April 2021 increased in comparison to the same month last year and new van sales increased in May 2021 when compared with May 2020. The increase is mainly due to the fact that in those months last year we were in the forefront of the pandemic.

According to figures produced by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of engines manufactured in the UK in April 2021 amounted to 129,691 whereas in April 2020 the figure was 1,147. That is an increase of 11,207.0%. In April 2021, there were 58,150 new engines built for the home market compared to only 136 in the same month last year and there were 71,541 built for export in April this year in comparison to only 1,011 in April 2020.

On a year to date basis to April 2021, the number of new engines manufactured in the UK totalled 665,195 compared to 602,440 for the same period to April 2020. That is an increase of 10.4%. There were 295,460 built for the home market on a year to date basis to April 2021 compared to 246,028 manufactured on a year to date basis to April 2020 – an increase of 20.1%. There were 369,735 new engines built for export on a year to date basis to April 2021 compared to 356,412 for the same period to April 2020 – an increase of 3.7%.

Let us hope that future months and beyond see a continued increase in the number of new engines manufactured here in the UK.

According to figures published by the SMMT, May 2021 saw a big rise in the number of new vans being registered in the UK in comparison to May 2020. In May 2021, the number of new vans sold in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 29,354 compared to 7,541 in May 2020 – an increase of 289.3%.

On a year to date basis to May 2021, the number of new vans sold in the UK in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 157,150 compared to 78,835 on a year to date basis to May 2020 – an increase of 99.3%.

The top 3 selling new vans in the UK in May 2021 were: –

  1. Ford Transit Custom                          4,065
  2. Ford Transit                                       2,401
  3. Volkswagen Transporter                    1,872

The top 3 selling new vans in the UK on a year to date basis to May 2021 were: –

  4. It is to be hoped that, in the coming months, there continues to be an increase in the number of new vans being registered in the UK. This should prove beneficial to various sectors of the motor trade industry such as those businesses supplying spare parts, the servicing departments of garages and those involved in the sale of used vans.
