June 28, 2022 by mti

Many of you operating within the motor trade industry will be concerned at the recent reduction in the number of new motor vehicles registered here in the UK. Those motor traders involved in the sale of new HGVs will be disappointed to read that the number of new HGVs registered in the UK in the first quarter of 2022 fell in comparison to the same quarter of last year according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In the first three months of 2022 the number of new heavy goods vehicles sold in the UK amounted to 9.837 whereas in the first three months of 2021 the number sold totalled 10,064. That equates to a drop of 2.3%.

The number of new DAF Trucks sold in the first quarter of 2022 amounted to 2,919 compared to 3,142 in the first quarter of 2021- a fall of 7.1%. The number of new Scania sold in the first quarter of 2022 amounted to 1,616 compared to 1,582 in the first three months of 2021 – a rise of 2.1%. The number of new Volvo’s sold in the first quarter of 2022 amounted to 1,609 compared to 1,400 in the first three months of 2021 – a rise of 14.9%.

The top 5 body types in the first quarter of 2022 and also the first quarter of 2021 were: –

  1. Tractor
  2. Box Van
  3. Tipper
  4. Curtain Sided
  5. Refuse Disposal

Certain sectors of the motor trade industry are going through a difficult period at the moment for a number of reasons. It is to be hoped that a turnaround in fortunes is seen sooner rather than later. The economic situation in the UK is not a good one at the moment and may continue to deteriorate. This could lead to a further drop in the number of new HGVs being sold. We will of course endeavor to continue to keep our readers up to date with relevant statistics.
