February Sees Fall In UK Car & Commercial Vehicle Production

April 2, 2021 by mti

Regrettably, there was more bad news for the motor trade industry with the announcement that both car production and commercial vehicle production in the UK dropped in February 2021 according to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In February 2021, the number of new cars built in the UK amounted to 105,008 compared to 122,171 in February 2020. That is a large drop of 17,163 that equates to a fall of 14.0%. The number of new cars manufactured for the home market in February this year totalled 17,689 whereas in February last year the figure was 27,169. That is a drop of 9,480 that equates to a reduction of 34.9%. The number of new cars built for the export market in February 2021 amounted to 87,319 whereas in February 2020 the figure was 95,002. That is a fall of 7,683 that equates to a drop of 8.1%. In February 2021, the overseas market accounted for 83.2% of new cars built whereas in February 2020 the figure was 77,8%.

On a year to date basis to February 2021, the number of new cars manufactured in the UK totalled 191,060 compared to 240,485 for the same period last year. That is a reduction of 49,425 โ€“ a drop of 20.6%.

However, on a positive note for the motor trade industry, the volume of hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid and battery electric cars increased to 23,019 in February 2021 with this figure being just over 25% more than in February 2020.

The forecast for new car production in the UK in 2021 is 1.05 million cars with this being over 15% more than in 2020.

Obviously, the pandemic has no doubt had a negative impact so let us hope that car showrooms re-open on 12th April 2021 and we see an increase in new car production.

Looking at new commercial vehicle manufacturing in the UK, it is disappointing to read that the number of such vehicles built in February 2021 was only 4,308 whereas in February 2020 the figure was 7,886. That is a drop of 3,578 that equates to a fall of 45.4% – a huge reduction. The number of new commercial vehicles built for the home market in February 2021 totalled 2,045 compared to 3,236 in February 2020 โ€“ a drop of 36.8%. The number of new commercial vehicles built for the export market in February 2021 amounted to 2,263 compared to 4,650 in February 2020 โ€“ a drop of 51.3%.

On a year to date basis to February 2021, the number of new commercial vehicles built amounted to 9.924 compared to 16,079 for the same period last year. That is a drop of 6,155 that equates to a fall of 38.3%.

This is the fifth month in a row that the number of new commercial vehicles built in the UK has fallen. Let us hope that we see an improvement in the coming months.
