First Quarter 2022 Sees Sale Of Used Cars Increase

May 15, 2022 by mti

The motor trade industry has been going through a difficult trading period in the last couple of years so it is great to report something positive happening within the industry. According to figures published by the Society of Motor Traders and Manufacturers (SMMT), the number of used cars sold here in the UK in the first quarter of 2022 has gone up by just over 5% on a year on year basis.

In the first quarter of 2021 there were 1,687,755 used cars sold in the UK but in the first quarter of 2022 the figure had risen to 1,774,351. Hopefully you will agree that is a sizeable increase. There was an increase seen in the sale of used cars in the first two months of 2022 but a fall in the third quarter of 2022.

It was pleasing to read that the number of used battery electric vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2022 rose significantly.

Let us hope that we continue to see the sale of used cars increase in the next few months.

The top three selling used cars in the first quarter of 2022 were: –

  1. Ford Fiesta                              73,851
  2. Vauxhall Corsa                        61,236
  3. Volkswagen Golf                    56,787

The top three colours of used cars sold in the first quarter of 2022 were:-

  1. Black                           383,418
  2. Blue                             291,199
  3. Silver/Aluminium        289,016

Whilst writing, the number of new vans in the up to 3.5 tonnes category sold in the UK in April 2022 amounted to 21,597 compared to 30,440 in April 2021 with this being a drop of 29.1%. On a year to date basis to April 2022, the number of new vans sold in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 95,941 compared to 127,796 for the same period in 2021 – a drop of 24.9%. It is to be hoped that we see an improvement in the coming months and beyond.
