Ford To Close Bridgend Plant

June 7, 2019 by Logan Biggs

Those of you operating within the motor trade industry will be disappointed to have heard that Ford is to close its Bridgend engine plant on 25th September 2020. This is just over a year away and, apparently, there are 1,700 people who will be loosing their jobs. That would be bad news for many people living in and around the Bridgend area as well as some businesses in the locality that are frequented by people working at the Ford plant.

Workers were given the news on the 6th June 2019 and were allowed to go home but are due to return to work on Monday 10th June 2019.

The plant opened way back in 1980 so has no doubt provided employment for many people over the years. Apparently, Ford used to have 27 plants here in the UK but this has fallen to only five.

In recent months, there has been quite a bit of bad news within the motor trade industry such as a fall in car manufacturing here in the UK as well as falls in the number of used cars and new cars being sold plus a fall in the number of new buses and coaches being sold.

It is to be hoped that as many of the workforce as possible at the above plant can find another job. There will no doubt be some who will be happy to take early retirement but there will be many others who need to work to bring in an income to support their families.

It will be interesting to see if there are announcements from one or two other car manufacturers in the coming months relating to future job losses. Let us hope that this does not happen. Car manufacturing in the UK is no doubt a significant contributor to the Treasury’s purse. We will continue to keep our readers up to date with any significant news relating to the motor trade industry.
