Good News For New Van Sales

February 13, 2019 by Logan Biggs

It is some weeks since we have had anything really positive to say about the motor trade industry. Well, figures have been published in the last few days by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) relating to the sale of new vans that make for positive reading.

It is pleasing to read that in the new van category to 3.5 tonnes there were 22,236 registered in January 2019 up from 20,475 when compared with January 2018. That is an increase of 1,761 with this equating to a rise of 8.6%.

Looking at these figures in a little more detail, the sale of pickups rose from 3,359 in January 2018 to 3,808 in January 2019 – a rise of 13.4%. The sale of 4 x 4s rose from 36 to 126 in the same periods – an increase of 250%. The sale of vans up to 2 tonnes rose from 1,482 to 1,952- an increase of 31.7%. The sale of vans in the 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes category dropped from 3,206 to 3,082 – a fall of 3.9%. The registration of vans in the 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes category rose from 12,392 to 13,268 – an increase of 7.1%.

Those of you in the motor trade that are involved in the sale of new vans will no doubt welcome the above news and let us hope that it continues for the remainder of 2019 and beyond.

The top selling new vans in January 2019 were: –

  1. Ford Transit Custom                           3,015
  2. Ford Transit                                        1,400
  3. Volkswagen Transporter                     1,272
  4. Mitsubishi L200                                  1,237
  5. Ford Transit Connect                          1,184
  6. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter                      1,170
  7. Ford Ranger                                        1,029
  8. Citroen Berlingo                                  959
  9. Peugeot Boxer                                     764
  10. Vauxhall Vivaro                                   763

As you can see, by far the outright leader was the Ford Transit Custom. It is interesting to see that 4 out of the top 10 selling new vans in January 2019 were manufactured by Ford. Will we see this pattern continue for the remainder of 2019 and beyond? We will continue to keep our readers updated with motor trade figures and any other interesting news.
