Guidance And Best Practice Document Produced For Retail Automotive Sector

May 21, 2020 by Logan Biggs

Motor traders will be interested to read the COVID-19: Industry Guidance And Best Practice For Automotive Retail document that was first published on the 13th May 2020 in readiness for when motor traders can open their doors to potential buyers of motor vehicles. Whilst a definite date has yet to be announced by the Government, it may be as soon as 1st June 2020.

The above document has been put together jointly by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA). The document is designed to be utilised in conjunction with a full risk assessment undertaken by the business. It has been put together using various other publications.

One of the objectives of the document is to make sure that motor retail premises are safe and clean for customers, staff and other visitors.

The document covers things like social distancing and hygiene measures. For instance, wherever possible, people should maintain a minimum distance of 2 metres between each other. Within a car showroom environment, this should be possible to manage by reducing the number of vehicles within the showroom and spacing them out. Other measures include test drives that should not involve the potential car buyer being accompanied, flexible working hours should be considered amongst employees, the number of customers coming into a car showroom should be limited, one-way systems should be introduced re walk-ins and those should be managed, all facilities should be sanitised and regular cleaning and disinfecting of things like vehicles and tools.

It will be interesting to see if the Government allows the likes of car showrooms to re-open from the 1st June 2020. The motor trade industry has been and is going through very tough times and the sooner it can “get back on its feet” the better for all concerned. We will endeavor to continue to keep our readers up to date with any developments.
