Increase In New HGV Sales

May 24, 2019 by Logan Biggs

It is good to be able to provide some positive news to those of our readers who operate within the motor trade industry. Motor traders in particular will be pleased to hear that the number of new HGV sales rose in the first quarter of 2019 in comparison to the first quarter of 2018 based upon information published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In Q1 of 2019, there were 11,859 new HGV sales whereas in the same period in 2018 there were 9,785 new HGVs sold. That is a large increase of 21.2% and, we are sure that you will agree, is great news.

Apparently there were quite a few incentives made to potential purchasers of HGVs to invest in new vehicles with this helping increase the number of registrations.

New tractors saw a big increase in purchases with this sector going up by over 30% when comparing the above 2 quarters from 4,162 to 5,417. Box vans saw an even larger increase in sales by over 64% from 908 to 1,493. Tippers also saw a large rise with sales going up by over 18% from 1,033 to 1,221. The same number of curtain sided HGV were sold in both quarters at 952. There was a small drop in refuse lorry sales from 485 in the first quarter of 2018 to 467 in the first quarter of 2019.

There were 5,520 new artic sales in the first quarter of 2019 compared to only 4,171 new artic sales in the first quarter of 2018. This equated to an increase of 32.3% – a sizeable increase.

There were 6,339 new all rigids sales in the first quarter of 2019 whereas there were 5,613 new all rigids sales in the first quarter of 2018. This equated to a rise of 12.9%.

Obviously, the HGV marketplace both new and used provides an awful lot of jobs relating to the likes of manufacturing vehicles, making spare parts, delivering parts, servicing of HGVs, cleaning of such vehicles, replacing tyres and body repair workshops.

Let us hope that the number of new HGV sales increase in future quarters as this has to be good news for the motor trade industry. We will continue to keep our readers updated with future statistics periodically.
