January Sees Drop In New Car Sales But Rise In New Van Sales

If you are a motor trader selling new cars then you will be disappointed to read that, according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of new cars sold here in the UK fell by 7.3% in January 2020 when compared with the same month last year but if you are involved in the sale of new vans then you will be pleased to hear that the number of new vans sold here in the UK in January 2020 rose by 5.9% when compared with January 2019.

New Car Sales

The number of new cars sold here in the UK in January 2020 amounted to 149,279 with this being a fall of 11,734 equating to a reduction of 7.3% when compared with the figure of 161,013 in January 2019. This will come as disappointing news to those motor traders selling new cars. Of those new cars sold here in the UK last month, 61,717 were for the private sector ( 13.9% less than in January 2019), 84,618 were for the fleet sector (2.2% less than in January 2019) and 2.944 were for the business sector (4.2% more than in January 2019). In January 2019, 71,686 were sold for the private sector, 86,503 were for the fleet sector and 2,824 were for the business sector.

The number of new diesel fuelled cars sold in January 2020 amounted to 29,605 compared to 46,262 in January 2019 – a large drop of 36%. The number of new petrol fuelled cars sold in January 2020 totalled 91,836 compared to 101,444 in January 2019 – a fall of 9.5%. The sale of alternatively fuelled cars saw an increase when comparing January 2020 with January 2019 as in January 2020 there were 27,838 of such new cars sold whereas in January 2019 there were 13,305.  

The top 5 selling new cars in January 2020 were: –

  1. Ford Fiesta                              6,087
  2. Ford Focus                              5,287
  3. Nissan Qashqai                       4,608
  4. Vauxhall Corsa                        4,373
  5. Volkswagen Golf                    4,027

New Van Sales

The number of new vans sold here in the UK in January 2020 amounted to 23,557 compared to 22,236 in January 2019 – an increase of 5.9%. The largest percentage increase was in the 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes category with 4,366 being sold in January 2020 compared to 3,082 in January 2019 – an increase of 41.7%.

  3. Vauxhall Vivaro                                   1,549
  4. Ford Transit Connect                          1,364
  5. Citroen Berlingo                                  1,245
