July Sees Drop In UK Car Manufacturing

It will probably not come as a surprise to those of you involved in the motor trade industry to read that the number of new cars built here in the UK dropped in July 2020 when compared to July 2019. The pandemic no doubt had a significant impact on performance.

In July 2020, the number of new cars manufactured in the UK amounted to 85,696 whereas in July last year the figure was 108,239. That is a significant fall of 22,543 that equates to a drop of 20.8%. The number of new cars built for the home market in July 2020 amounted to 13,434 whereas in July 2019 the figure was 21,371 – a fall of 37.1%. The number of new cars manufactured for the export market in July 2020 amounted to 72,434 whereas in July 2019 the figure was 86,868 – a drop of 16.8%.

On a year to date basis to July 2020, the number of new cars built in the UK amounted to 467,053 whereas for the same period to July 2019 the figure was 774,760 – a drop of 39.7%. The number of new cars built for the home market on a year to date basis to July 2020 amounted to 85,780 whereas for the same period to July last year the figure was 154,571 – a fall of 44.5%. The number of new cars manufactured for export for the year to date to July 2020 amounted to 381,273 whereas for the same period to July 2019 the figure was 620,189 – a drop of 38.5%.

Obviously these figures are concerning and let us hope that we see an improvement in the coming months as it is to be hoped that more people return to work.

On a positive note, the number of commercial vehicles built in the UK in July 2020 amounted to 5,234 with this being an increase of 180 vehicles when compared with the figure of 5,054 for July 2020. That is a rise of 3.6%. There were 2,329 commercial vehicles built for the home market in July 2020 whereas in July 2019 there were 2,282 – a rise of 2.1%. There were 2,905 new commercial vehicles manufactured for the export market in July 2020 compared to 2,772 for July 2019 – an increase of 4.8%. Disappointingly, on a year to date basis to July 2020, there were 31,655 new commercial vehicles built whereas on a year to date basis to July 2019 the figure was 40,184 – a drop of 21.2%.
