June Sees Further Decline In Sale Of New Cars And Vans

July 6, 2020 by Logan Biggs

It is perhaps not surprising that motor traders saw a fall in the number of new cars sold in June 2020 when compared to the same month last year. After all, although car showrooms have been able to re-open in June, it will no doubt take some time for us to see the number of sales improve to anywhere near the levels that were seen in 2019.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), in June 2020, there were 145,377 new cars sold here in the UK compared to 223,421 in June 2019. That is a reduction of 34.9%. The number of new diesel cars sold in June 2020 amounted to 23,011 compared to 57,271 in June last year – a large fall of 59.8%.  The number of new petrol cars sold in June 2020 amounted to 87,896 compared to 146,308 in June 2019 – a drop of 39.9%. The volumes of new electric/battery cars sold rose by quite a lot in June 2020 compared to June 2019.

On a year to date basis to June 2020, the total number of new cars sold amounted to 653,502 compared to 1,269,245 for the same period to June 2019 – a reduction of 48.5%.

The top 5 selling new cars in June 2020 were: –

  1. Vauxhall Corsa                                    4,528
  2. Ford Fiesta                                          4,386
  3. Toyota Yaris                                        4,200
  4. Ford Focus                                          3,551
  5. MINI                                                   3,400

Let us hope that the figures for the number of new cars registered look better next month.

The number of new vans sold in the UK in June 2020 in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 30,041 compared to 39,929 for the month of June 2019 – a fall of 24.8%. On a year to date basis to June 2020 the figure was 108,876 compared to 196,418 for the same period to June 2019 – a fall of 44.6%.

The top 5 selling new vans in June 2020 were: –

  1. Ford Transit Custom                          5,930
  2. Ford Transit                                       2,770
  3. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter                     2,203
  4. Vauxhall Vivaro                                  1,684
  5. Citroen Berlingo                                 1,322

It is to be hoped that the figures for the number of new vans registered look better next month.

We will continue to provide updates throughout the year for our motor trade readers and anyone else connected with the motor trade industry.
