March 2021 Sees Increase In New Car Registrations

May 4, 2021 by mti

Unfortunately, probably due primarily to the pandemic, we have not been able to report anything positive in respect of the motor trade industry for many weeks. So, motor traders will be pleased to read that March 2021 saw an increase in the number of new cars sold here in the UK according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In March 2020, the number of new cars registered amounted to 254,684 whereas in March 2021 the figure had increased by 29,280 to 283.964 that equates to a rise of 11.5% – a significant and positive increase. Those of you involved in the sale of new cars will welcome this news.

The number of new fleet cars sold in March 2021 totalled 151,360 compared to 117,576 in March 2020 – a rise of 33,784 equating to an increase of 28.7%. The number of new cars sold for the business sector in March 2021 amounted to 5, 754 compared to 4,852 in March 2020. That is a rise of 902 that equates to an increase of 18.6%.

On a year to date basis to March 2021, the number of new cars registered amounted to 425,525 compared to 483,557 for the same period to March 2020. That is a drop of 58,032 with that equating to a fall of 12.0%.

On a year to date basis to March 2021, the number of new diesel cars sold totalled 48,574 compared to 91,419 on a year to date basis to March 2020 with this equating to a drop of 46.9%. The top 5 selling new cars sold on a year to date basis to March 2021 in the UK are: –

Whilst it is good to see an improvement in new car sales in the UK in March 2021, we are sure that motor traders as well as various other parts of the motor trade industry will agree it is disappointing to see the figures on a year to date basis to March 2021. It is to be hoped that, as we gradually come out of the pandemic, we see the improvement that was made in March 2021 continue in the coming months. Who knows, we may see such a turnaround in the figures that we reach a point at some time in 2021 where, on a year to date basis, the number of new cars registered exceeds the figures on a like for like basis in 2020.
