March Sees Rise In New Van Sales

April 23, 2019 by Logan Biggs

There is not an awful lot of good news in the motor trade industry at the moment so it is pleasing to see that the number of new vans sold here in the UK went up by a significant level when comparing March 2019 with March 2018 according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The sale of all vans up to 3.5 tonnes rose from 59,764 in March 2018 to 66,123 in March 2019. This equates to a significant rise of 10.6%. This news will please motor traders involved in the buying and selling of both new and used vans.

The sale of new pickups rose by 6.7% when comparing March 2019 with March 2018. 10,134 new pickup vans were sold in March 2018 but this had increased to 11,005 in March 2019. The sale of 4x4s fell slightly from 207 to 206. Van sales in the up to 2 tonnes category dropped from 4,892 to 4,374 – a significant drop of 10.6%. New van sales in the 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes category rose from 8,324 to 9,817 – a rise of 17.9%. New van sales in the 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes category increased from 36,027 to 40,721 – a rise of 13%.

The top 5 selling new vans in March 2019 were: –

  1. Ford Transit Custom                                 11,573
  2. Ford Transit                                              4,635
  3. Volkswagen Transporter                           3,424
  4. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter                            3,228
  5. Ford Ranger                                              3,184

It is interesting to see that new Ford vans feature on three occasions in the top 5 and it is also interesting to see how many more Ford Transit Customs were sold when compared with other makes and models.

It is to be hoped that the number of new vans sold here in the UK will continue to rise throughout the remainder of 2019 and beyond. Such sales are good for the motor trade industry as a whole with so many sectors benefitting i.e. servicing departments, tyre replacement firms and car body repair shops. We will continue to keep you updated about any interesting developments.
