August 5, 2020 by Logan Biggs

Motor traders and those of you operating within the motor trade industry will be pleased to read that there was an increase in the number of new cars and vans sold in the month of July 2020 in the UK when compared with the same month in 2019 according to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The number of new cars registered in July 2020 amounted to 174,887 whereas in July 2019 the figure was 157,198. This equates to a rise of 11.3%. The number of new cars sold for the private sector was 79,929 in July 2020 compared to 66,361 in July 2019 – a rise of 20.4%. The number of new cars sold for the fleet market in July 2020 was 91,857 compared to 87,320 in July 2019 – a rise of 5.2%. The number of new cars sold for the business market was 3,101 in July 2020 compared to 3,517 in July 2019 – a fall of 11.8%.

However, the figures on a year to date basis to July 2020 do not look good but this is hardly surprising considering the pandemic. There were 828,389 new cars registered for the aforementioned period compared to 1,426,443 for the same period to July 2019. That is a huge reduction of 41.9%.

The top 5 selling new cars in July 2020 were: –

  1. Vauxhall Corsa                                    5,455
  2. Ford Fiesta                                          5,421

  4. Volkswagen Golf                                3,936
  5. Mercedes-Benz A-Class                      3,922

Looking at the figures for the number of new vans registered in July 2020, there were 27,701 in the up to 3.5 tonnes categories compared to 25,862 in July 2019 – a rise of 7.1%. On a year to date basis to July 2020 in the same categories, there were 136,577 sold whereas in the same period to July 2019 there were 222,280 sold – a huge fall of 38.6%.

The top 5 selling new vans in July 2020 were: –

  1. Ford Transit Custom                           3,405
  2. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter                      2,581
  3. Ford Transit                                        1,785
  4. Volkswagen Transporter                     1,545
  5. Vauxhall Vivaro                                   1,381

It is to be hoped that we see further improvements in August 2020 for both the number of new cars and new vans being sold here in the UK as it would be great to see a period of sustained improvement in the coming months to help motor traders get back on their feet that should in turn lead to better prospects for the motor trade industry.
