New Car Sales Go Up In September 2019

On a positive note, the number of new car registrations in September 2019 rose to 343,255 when compared with the same month in 2018 when 338,834 new cars were registered in the UK. That is a rise of 1.3%- not a huge increase but nevertheless a step in the right direction. This news will no doubt please motor traders and others operating within the motor trade industry.

In September 2019, the number of new diesel cars registered totalled 77,510 with this being a drop of 20.3% from the figure of 97,308 seen in September 2018. The number of new petrol cars sold in September of this year was 224,828 up from 215,094 in September 2018 – a rise of 4.5%. There was an increase in the number of new electric cars of varying types sold in September 2019 when compared with September 2018. The market share for new diesel cars fell from 31.7% to 25.8% and the market share for petrol cars rose from 62.1% to 65.4% when comparing September 2018 with September 2019.

The number of private new car sales in September 2019 rose by 0.1% from 162,939 to 163,173. The number of fleet new car sales rose by 8.6% from 155,530 to 168,850. However, the number of new business car sales fell significantly by 44.8% from 20,365 to 11,232.

For the nine months to September 2019, the number of new cars registered amounted to 1,862,271 whereas for the same period to September 2018 the figure was 1,910,820. This equates to a drop of 2.5%.

The sale of new diesel cars in the 9 months to September 2019 was 480,388 – a drop of 20.6% from 605,355 when compared with the same period last year. The sale of new petrol cars for the 9 months to September 2019 came to 1,217,577 – a rise of 2.6% from 1,186,277 in comparison with the same period to September 2018. There was a rise in the number of new electric cars of varying types sold with the exception of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles.

The number of private new car sales for the above periods fell by 2.4% from 858,903 to 838,078. The number of new fleet car sales rose slightly by 0.1% from 975,443 to 976,304. The number of business new car sales dropped by a large number from 76,474 to 47,889 – a reduction of 37.4%.
