New Van Registrations Increase In February

March 16, 2019 by Logan Biggs

Motor traders focusing on the sale of new vans here in the UK will be pleased to read that, according to data produced by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there was a rise in the number of new vans being registered in February 2019.

In February 2019, there was an increase of 1.8% in the number of new vans sold here in the UK when compared with the same month last year. In February 2018 there were 14,135 new vans sold whereas in February 2019 this had risen by 249 to 14,384.

The number of new pickups sold in February 2018 was 1,542 whereas in February 2019 the figure was 1,505. That is a drop of 37 – 2.4%. The number of new 4 x 4s sold in February 2018 was 43 but in February 2019 it was 25. That is a drop of 18 – 41.9%. The number of new vans sold weighing less than 2.0 tonnes was 991 in February 2018 but in February 2019 it was 1,037. That is a rise of 46 – 4.6%. The number of new vans sold in the weight category 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes in February 2018 was 2,586 but in February 2019 it was 2,469. This is a fall of 117 – 4.5%. The number of new vans sold in the weight category 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes in February 2018 was 8,973 but in February 2019 it was 9,348. That is a rise of 375 – 4.2%.

The best selling vans in February 2019 were: –

  1. Ford Transit Custom                         2,023
  2. Ford Transit                                      1,218
  3. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter                    1,204
  4. Ford Transit Connect                        777
  5. Vauxhall Vivaro                                 617

It is pleasing to see that Ford is building three van models that feature in the above list and let us hope that this continues throughout the remainder of 2019 and beyond.

Of course, the more new vans that are sold will presumably mean that the number of used vans that are either being sold or put in part exchange rises. This will provide business for motor traders that are not only involved in the sale of new vans but second hand ones as well. We will continue to keep our readers updated throughout the year in respect of the number of new vans being sold.
