If you are a motor trader, unfortunately, yet again we have some bad news to inform you of. The number of new cars registered here in the UK fell in May 2019 when compared with the same month last year.

In May 2019, 183,724 new cars were sold in the UK yet in May 2018 192,649 new cars were sold. That is a drop of 8,925 and equates to a reduction of 4.6%.

The sale of new diesel cars fell from 62,281 in May 2018 to 50,900 in May of this year. That is a reduction of 18.3%. AFV new cars had a market share of 5.6% in May 2018 but this has increased to 6.6% in May 2019.  This is great news for AFVs.

On a year to date basis to May 2018, the number of new cars sold was 1,079,049 but this dropped to 1,045,824 for the same period to May 2019. This is a fall of 3.1% – a sizeable fall. New diesel car sales for the same period in 2018 amounted to 354,327 but this fell to 289,273 for the same period in 2019 – a drop of 18.4%.  New petrol car sales for the same period in 2018 amounted to 669,318 but has gone up to 693,318 for the same period in 2019 – an increase of 3.6%. New AFV car sales for the year to date basis to May 2018 amounted to 55,580 but it is pleasing to see that this rose to 63,233 on a year to date basis to May 2019 – a large rise of 13.8%.

The top 5 selling new cars in May 2019 were: –

  1. Ford Fiesta                                          6,710
