Registration Of Number Of New Cars Drops In June

July 11, 2022 by mti

There continues to be disappointing news for the motor trade industry – in particular for motor traders. According to figures recently published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) the number of new car sales in June 2022 was the lowest performance for that month since way back in 1996.

In June 2022 there were 140,948 new cars sold here in the UK compared to 186,128 in June 2021. That is a significant drop of 24.3%. On a year to date basis to June 2022 there were 802,079 new cars sold here in the UK compared to 909,973 for the same period last year – a reduction of 11.9%.

In June 2022 the number of new diesel fuelled cars amounted to 8,003 compared to 15,027 in June 2021 – a drop of 46.7%. The number of new petrol fuelled cars dropped from 86,411 in June 2021 to 62.005 in June 2022 – a fall of 28.2%. Plug in cars accounted for just over one in five of new cars sold in June 2022.

Private, fleet and business sales of new cars in June 2022 reduced in comparison with June 2021 with fleet sales coming down the most – by 27.6%.

The top 5 selling new cars in the UK in June 2022 were: –

  1. Vauxhall Corsa                     5,014
  2. Tesla Model Y                      4,194
  3. MINI                                    3,055
  4. Nissan Qashqai                   2,987
  5. Volkswagen Golf                 2,965

The top 5 selling new cars in the UK on a year to date basis to June 2022 were: –

   1.  Vauxhall Corsa               22,212

2.  Ford Puma                     18,367

   3.  Nissan Qashqai             16,583

   4.  MINI                                16,541

   5.  Kia Sportage                  16,119

One of the reasons for the drop in new car sales is due to the worldwide shortage of semiconductors.

Motor traders and others working within the motor trade industry will be hoping that an improvement is quickly seen within the new car sector as so many areas of the industry are dependent upon it for employment.
