September Sees Fall In New Car Registrations

Motor traders will be disappointed to read that the number of new cars registered in September 2020 fell in comparison to the same month last year according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This news will also no doubt concern other parts of the motor trade industry.

In September 2020 there were 328,041 new cars sold yet in September 2019 the figure was 343,255. That is a drop of 4.4%.

It is perhaps not a surprise for this to happen when you consider that we are still in a pandemic due to COVID-19 whereas last year this was not the case.

In September 2020 there were 161,363 new cars registered for the private sector compared to 163,220 for the same month last year – a drop of 1.1%. There were 159,081 new cars sold for the fleet market in September this year whereas in the same month last year the figure was 168,882 – a fall of 5.8%. In September 2020 there were 7,597 new cars sold for the business sector compared to 11,153 for the same month last year – a fall of 31.9%.

On a year to date basis to September 2020, the number of new cars sold amounted to 1,243,656. That was a big drop when compared with the 1,862,271 new cars registered for the same period to September 2019 – a fall of 33.2%. For the year to date to September 2020 the number of new cars sold to private buyers was 595,717 compared to 838,104 for the same period to September 2019 – a drop of 28.9%. Fleet new car sales for the year to date to September 2020 amounted to 622,517 compared to 976,363 for the same period last year – a drop of 36.2%. New business car sales for the year to date to September 2020 amounted to 25,422 whereas for the same period last year the figure was 47,804 – a drop of 46.8%.

On a year to date to September 2020, the number of new diesel cars sold amounted to 209,093 whereas for the same period last year the figure was 478,147 – a drop of 56.3%. On a year to date basis to September 2020, the number of new petrol cars sold amounted to 719,908 compared to 1,204,719 for the same period last year – a drop of 40.2%.

  1. Vauxhall Corsa                                             10.553

  4. Volkswagen Polo                                           7,417
  5. Volkswagen Golf                                           6,788
