September 26, 2019 by Logan Biggs

There have not been many positive things happening within the motor industry to shout about in the last few months so we thought we would highlight three positive sets of figures for August 2019 produced by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

UK Car Manufacturing

The number of new cars built in the UK in August 2019 totalled 92,158 compared to 89,255 in August 2018. This was a rise of 3.3%. The number manufactured for the home market was 18,725 in August 2019 whereas in the same month last year the figure was 16,261 – a rise of 15.2%. The number of new cars built that were exported in August this year totalled 73,433 compared to 72,994 in August 2018 – an increase of 0.6%.

Whilst this is pleasing news, it should be borne in mind that, on a year to date basis to August 2019, the number of new cars built amounted to 866,918 whereas for the same period to August last year there were 1,044,879 new cars manufactured – a drop of 17%.

UK Engine Manufacturing

Again, whilst this is good news, it should be borne in mind that, on a year to date basis to August 2019, the number of new engines built here in the UK totalled 1,688,981 compared to 1,836,965 for the same period to August 2018 – a fall of 8.1%.

Last month there were 5,544 built whereas in August 2018 the figure was 3,748 – a rise of 47.9%. The number built for the home market was 1,932 in August 2019 compared to 1,647 in August 2018 – a rise of 17.3%. The number of commercial vehicles built for the export market in August 2019 was 3,612 whereas in August last year it was 2,101 – a rise of 71.9%.
