March 23, 2019 by Logan Biggs

There are obviously fewer motor traders selling new buses and coaches than there are selling new cars but those of you involved in this specialist sector of the motor trade industry will be disappointed to read that there was a drop in the sale of such vehicles in 2018 when compared with 2017.

In 2018, there were 7,236 new buses and coaches sold here in the UK. This was a fall of 5.6% when compared with the figures for 2017 according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). .........read more »

  2. Fall In New Coach And Bus Registrations

July 28, 2018 by Logan Biggs

We have regularly provided updates about the number of new cars and vans that are registered here in the UK but we have never mentioned about the number of new coaches and buses that are being sold. So, those of you in the motor trade involved in selling such vehicles may find the following information useful.

According to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there were 1,793 new buses and coaches registered in the first quarter of 2018. It is somewhat concerning that this is a drop of 4.5% in comparison to the first quarter of 2017.

Interestingly, minibuses above 3.5 tonnes did particularly well with 1,031 being sold in the first quarter of this year. That is a rise of 24.1% when compared with the same period in 2017. The number of new single deck coaches and buses registered fell by 18% to 461 when comparing both the above quarters. The number of new double deck coaches and buses dropped by a huge 37.8% to 301.

The top five selling brands in the first quarter of 2018 were: –

    1. Ford 579
    2. Mercedes 345
    3. Alexander Dennis 234
    4. Volvo 153
    5. Peugeot 110

Ford and Mercedes both saw their sales of new buses and coaches increase in the first quarter of 2018 in comparison to the first quarter of 2017. The other three brands saw their sales volumes drop.

Those of you who are working within the motor trade industry, from a UK perspective, may feel that it is good to see that Ford are in top spot for the number of new buses and coaches that have been registered here in the UK in the first quarter of 2018. It will be interesting to see if this continues throughout the remainder of 2018 and beyond. Of course, we will continue to provide updates for our readers periodically about the sale of such vehicles as well as other types of vehicles.
