October 21, 2017 by Logan Biggs

Motor traders involved in the sale of new vans will be disappointed to read that the number of new vans sold last month here in the UK dropped by 4.2% when compared with September 2016. This is obviously not good news for the motor trade industry.

Back in September last year there were 59,857 new vans registered in the UK yet in September of 2017 the number of such vehicles registered dropped to 57,368.

On a year to date basis to September 2016 291,714 new vans were registered but on a year to date basis to September 2017 the figure had fallen to 282,679. This is a fall of 3.1% that we are sure you will agree is a significant drop.

The above data is published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on a regular basis along with other interesting statistics affecting the motor trade industry. You can read numerous reports on their website.

The percentage of 4 x 4s sold in September 2017 fell by a large figure when compared with the same month last year. There were 53 sales of such vehicles last month compared to 99 sales in the same month last year. That is a very big drop of 46.5%. However, when looking at the year to date figures to September 2017 there was a fall of 91.4% when compared to September 2016 with 4,212 4 x 4s being sold in the 12 months to September 2016 but only 364 sold in the same period to September 2017.

The top selling LCVs in September 2017 were: –

    1. Ford Transit Custom 8,892
    2. Ford Transit 4,436
    3. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4,293
