Used Car Sales Drop In 2018

February 21, 2019 by Logan Biggs

If you are a motor trader dealing in the buying and selling of second hand cars, what sort of a year did you have in 2018? According to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), used car sales here in the UK fell in 2018 in comparison to the previous year.

Unfortunately, the number of used cars sold fell by 2.1% when comparing 2018 with 2017. In 2018, there were 7,945,040 used cars sold whereas in 2017 the number of second hand cars sold amounted to 8,113,020. That is a drop of 167,980 – a significant number and one that the motor trade industry could have done without as there has not been all that much to be positive about last year.

In the 4th quarter of 2018 there were 1,762,493 used cars sold and in 2017 the figure was 1,774,832. That is a fall of 12,339 with this equating to a reduction of 0.7%.

The number of used AFVs sold in 2018 amounted to 106,658. That is an increase of 27% when compared to the figures for 2017. That, we are sure you will agree, is a pleasing performance.

It is interesting to read that the number of used diesel cars sold in 2018 was 0.3% more than in 2017 and that the number of used petrol fuelled cars sold dropped by 4.2%. This is very different to the figures for the number of new petrol and diesel cars sold.

The top 10 selling used cars in 2018 were: –

  1. Ford Fiesta                              360,868
  2. Ford Focus                              322,532

No doubt motor traders that are involved in the buying and selling of used cars will be hoping for a better year in 2019 compared to 2018.
