Used Car Sales Drop Slightly In Q1 2019

May 16, 2019 by Logan Biggs

Those of you running a business in the motor trade industry, in particular motor traders, will find it interesting to read that there was a small reduction in the number of used cars sold in Q1 2019 when compared with Q1 2018.

Data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals that the number of used cars sold in Q1 2019 was 2,020, 144 whereas in Q1 2018 the figure was 2,031,661. That is a drop of 11,517 that equates to a fall of 0.6% – only a small drop but nevertheless it is still a fall in numbers.

The top 10 selling used cars in Q1 2019 were: –

  1. Ford Fiesta                             92,798
  2. Vauxhall Corsa                       79,424
  3. Ford Focus                             77,082
  4. Volkswagen Golf                    66,644
  5. Vauxhall Astra             63,396
  6. BMW 3 Series                        47,572
  7. MINI                                       42,175
  8. Volkswagen Polo                   39,894
  9. Renault Clio                           33,471
  10. Audi A3                                  31,604

The most popular colour choice for used cars was black.

There has been a big rise in the sale of used AFVs with an increase of over 30%. This is probably not a surprise as AFVs have been around for some time now so one would expect more to appear in the used car market sector. It will be interesting to see if this pattern continues in the coming quarters.

The used car market is a major source of business for other parts of the motor trade industry such as MOT centres, replacement tyres, car parts, servicing and engine repairs and car body shops. The buying and selling of used cars also has an impact on the new car market and vice versa. The success of the used car market also has an impact on the labour market as there are many thousands of people working in the industry. We will continue to keep our readers updated when further figures are produced about the used car market.
