Used Car Sales Rise In Third Quarter

November 21, 2019 by Logan Biggs

These days, it is rare to provide any positive news in relation to the motor trade but we have some that will please motor traders who are involved in the sale of used cars.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of used cars sold here in the UK in the third quarter of 2019 increased by 18,925 when compared with the same quarter of last year. In the third quarter of 2018 there were 2,057,457 second hand cars sold whereas in the same quarter of this year the figure was 2.076,382. This equates to a rise of 0.9%.

The figures for the year to date to the third quarter of 2019 showed a different situation with 6,130,762 used cars being sold in that period compared to 6,182,547 for the same period last year. That is a fall of 51,785 – a drop of 0.8%.

The top 5 selling used cars in the third quarter of 2019 were: –

  1. Ford Fiesta                              90,428
  2. Vauxhall Corsa                        77,101
  3. Ford Focus                              75,093
  4. Volkswagen Golf                    67,649
  5. Vauxhall Astra             63,906

The top 5 colours of used cars sold in the third quarter of 2019 were: –

  1. Black                           441,172
  2. Silver/aluminium         387,329
  3. Blue                             356,828
  4. Grey                            296,255
  5. White                          261,529

The number of used cars sold in the UK also has a knock on effect on the number of new cars sold. Also, the number of second hand cars exchanging hands has an impact on other sectors of the motor trade industry. For instance, a number of used cars sold will be serviced before being offered for sale so this provides work for mechanics and some of those cars will have new parts fitted.  New tyres may also be required and also bodywork repairs carried out. Let us hope that the number of used cars being sold here in the UK continues to improve.
